Peter Kreeft in his book, The God who Loves You, writes:
“Agape is closely tied to faith and hope, the other two greatest things in the world. For the source of agape is God and God’s grace, which is the gift of God’s own life in our souls. The gift is received by faith, grows by hope, and flowers by love. Love is faith’s flower, hope is its stem. Grace comes to into us by faith, like water through the roots of a tree. It rises in us by hope, like sap rising through the trunk of the tree. And it matures in us by agape as fruit matures on a tree’s branches, fruit for the neighbor’s eating. The three greatest things in the world – the three “theological virtues” faith, hope, and agape – are the one reality with three parts like a tree.”
